Interview Tips for South African Job Seekers

Landing the interview is half the battle. Here's how to walk in prepared and walk out with the offer.

Before the interview

Research the company

Know their products, services, recent news, and culture. Check their LinkedIn, website, and Glassdoor reviews. SA interviewers love candidates who've done their homework.

Prepare your STAR stories

STAR = Situation, Task, Action, Result. Have 5–6 specific examples from your work history ready. Most SA behavioural interviews follow this format.

Know your CV inside out

You'll be asked about everything on it. Be ready to explain gaps, short tenures, and career changes honestly.

Common SA interview questions

"Tell me about yourself."

Keep it professional and relevant — 2 minutes max. Cover your background, current role, and why you're interested in this position.

"Why do you want to work here?"

Show you've researched them. Mention something specific about their work, culture, or growth trajectory.

"What are your salary expectations?"

Do your research on market rates using Payscale or CareerJunction salary guides. Give a range, not a single number.

"Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

Show ambition but keep it realistic and relevant to the role. SA employers value loyalty and progression within a company.

On the day

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early — never late, never more than 20 minutes early
  • Dress one level above the company's dress code when in doubt
  • Bring printed copies of your CV even if you submitted digitally
  • Turn your phone off, not silent
  • Ask at least two thoughtful questions at the end — it shows genuine interest
